There is an issue where .xls files may be automatically saved at closing them after being opened with Excel, even if the file was not edited. The behavior is likely related to the way Excel saves this file type, especially compared to other save flows in the Office suite.

As a workaround, please consider saving your Excel files in .xlsx format, or use OpenOffice to edit them.
